: Field recording of acoustic remains and movement traversing the old Silk Road regions and Northern ecologies
- EMS residence program, Stockholm
- June 3 ~ July 29, 2026
- Description
: This project is structured in two phases : one-month field recording expedition followed by another one-month studio production period. The fieldwork will take place across a few selected locations in Eurasia and Northern Europe, collecting diverse environmental sound materials. The recording samples will subsequently be processed through pre-developed generative digital algorithms to create a series of sondscape compositions. The studio production phase will be conducted at the Swedigh National Music Studio (EMS) in Stockholm.
The collected sound materials will form a multilayered sonic archive developed through field research. Conceptually, the project follows a narrative trajectory inspired by the historical Silk Road cities, tracing connections between regions that once served as major routes of cultural and economic exchange between East and West. The compositional structure is organized into a sequence of thematic stages : 'Origin, Stillness, Movement, Exchange, Architectue, Fusion, Transformation, Terminal' (could be modified while doing field recording). For each stage, specific locations are selected as shown on the map above, and recording work is planned to trace region-specific keynote sound at each location. The keynote sound will be documented with a few criteria - different times of day and varying degrees of human presence. This approach aims to capture the evolving acoustic identity of each location, revealing how environmental, cultural and social factors shape the soundscape over time.
All field research activities will be documented through both audio recording and photography, creating a comprehensive audiovisual archive. Recording equipment will include Zoom H6 (studio ver.) and Zoom H3-VR ambisonic recorder, enabling the capture of both detailed environmental sounds and spatial soundscapes.
